The Polytechnic University

The Polytechnic University

What is so special in this university ? ----All the buildings here in this university are built in two elements, circles and straight lines.? These two are the basic elements of all designs. Besides this, when you look up to the night sky, there's a Mars Express (火星快車)overhead; that is the machine now in Mars for collection of rocks, is designed by a pundit (專家)of machinery, a professor in the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong.

The buildings in this university are simply linked up by circles at four corners and lines to join those circles together. It stands for basic elements of technical designs are just these two elements and tell others they are specialize in such designs. Thus their shape comes out as in the following pictures :

The Hong Kong Polytechnic College was upgraded into a university in 1994, before that it was a famous local vocational school. So it carries on its tradition even now. Before it was upgraded to a university, its has been famous for a lot of vocational courses ranging from several months to two years. And now, it is also famous for the one year or two year diploma or even the associate bachelor degree That is one who passes the associate bachelor degree; credits will be exempted when he or she is going to carry on the third year or fourth year of bachelor degree.

Most of my students are from the Business School, and some of them would even ask how to become a licensed stock broker in Hong Kong. You have to take the exam but before that, you have to attend a 3-month course first. Where ? In the Polytechnic University; it is one of their extension course Lectures will be given in the evening; once a week and each lesson last for 3 hours. The fee will be about HK$1,500. If you think it’s too expensive, then you can come to join the course in the Sincere Finance Holding Limited, where the major lecture is me, and you can be my lecturee again.

Besides that, there are a lot of special subjects in the Polytechnic University, just see the photo underneath; even there is an institute especially for the design of underwear.

There are some subjects in the Polytechnic University, which is the sole provider in Hong Kong. That means no other university in Hong Kong can provide such a terrain of knowledge (知識領域)  in the field of :  Design, Engineering Physics, Fashion & Textiles, Geomatics, International Shipping & Transport Logistics, Medical Laboratory Science, Optometry, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy & Radiography.

In Hong Kong, we have a term of Top-4 Universities. That is for any students inside the first four ranking universities, they can use their own library card to borrow books in the library of other three universities besides their own. Namely they are the Hong Kong University, Chinese University, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology and the Polytechnic University. But in the British ranking, the City University ranks fourth in Hong Kong while the first three remains unchanged as local ranking.

The local ranking also has an assessment; that is students from which university will be easiest to find a job. The outcome is the first one is Chinese University and the second is Polytechnic University. However, this assessment is done on using the shortest period after graduation to find a job, without concerning the level of remuneration. For practically it really is, that is fresh graduate would not mind the level of payment so much, what they concern most is how to find a job as soon as possible.

So underneath are the photos taken by my super-camera. The university seemed to be located among a forest, but actually it is located in the stone forest of downtown area. It is situated just opposite the Hung Hum railway terminus, where the through trains to Beijing, Shanghai and Gunagzhou leave there. The university had been established in 1937 as a vocational college, but in 1994, it became the fourth university in Hong Kong. It has just passed its 70th anniversary in 2007. Tai Pai Dong 大排檔

         Tai Pai Dong

What is Tai Pai Dong ?

It is a form of cooked food stall on the road side for basic citizens, the culmination was in the 1950s and 1960s, but now it’s as precious as an antique, and will soon vanish forever in Hong Kong. It was a unique culture and also a group memory of the people Hong Kong.

On the above right photo, the first man dressed in camouflage fatigue uniform (迷彩野戰服) and white shoes is me. You can see the stalls are actually situated in the middle of the road; it is an open market in Central District, the far end of Stanley Street. These two photos shown clearly that on the left side is the pedestrian path, tables are situated in the midst of the road, and the width of the road is just one table plus one stall. On the left photo, you can see the second floors of the building just at the back of the stalls.

Just after the World War II, live was so hard. Consumers had no money to get in restaurant, businessmen also had insufficient fund to establish a restaurant inside of shop premises. Thus the Tai Pai Dong came into existence. Literally, it means a grand parade of stalls. Initially, there were several such kinds of stalls grouped together to have a parade. But you can also see there is a parade of tables. In peak years, a stall can have 50 tables at the same time which even more than a large restaurant, but the cost is much lower and thus higher the profit.

In the economic bloom of the 1970s, such stalls were upgraded into fast food shops. For the government had to control the hygiene condition. Thus license of these stalls stopped to issue, but the existing stalls could carry on running until they quit it or the licenser pass away. Now, 40 years later, those old people actually retired and second generation is running the stalls, but third generation would like to enter into international firms with better fringe benefits and working conditions, so they would not have any successor again.

My close students knew that during working time, I can take anything to feed my stomach; but in the evening, I would like to try various delicious food, varying from French, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean......etc; so what is special in this Cantonese Tai Pai Dong, why it attracts me ? Beaches it is quite Cantonese with a reasonable price, it’s not cheap because it’s famous. So even if the dinning environment is quite worse, you still have to line up and book the table first, and wait for a long time before you can actually taste the food.

You can also see that the stall is the kitchen, and there's also a food parade. There would not be any menu for you to pick up form an a la carte, you just point at the food and tell them how to cook. In the lower left photo, the one standing with his back against the camera is the waiter, and on his right side the one in horizontal stripe dress is the cook.

Central District is famous for scarcity of land, how come these stalls can be survived. It is surviving under the footbridge to the mid-level. You can see from the lower right photo, the stalls are situated under the mid-level escalator. When such escalator came into use, it was the largest outdoor escalator system in the world, linking the downtown of Central District with the residents in mid-level. Later the record was overwritten by the outdoor escalator system in the Ocean Park.

These stalls opens day and night, while some other people would say there are also some Tai Pai Dongs in the Temple Street. Mind that those in Temple Street only open in the evening, for in the day time, a lot of vehicles are running on the Temple Street.

Tai Pai Dong is a special eating culture in Hong Kong, for those that just use one or two years to study master course in Hong Kong should not forget to visit these stalls. Some might not accept the eating environment, but if you can try something special, it’s worthwhile to pay a visit to it. Since it’s a diminishing industry, perhaps a few years later when you come back to Hong Kong, you can not find it again.

What is Chinese ?

What is Chinese ?

 English Test of
               TEM-8  &  CET-6
English in 600 AD                English in 900 AD   English in 1100 AD

There’s quite a unique phenomena, for students that are close to me, they all strong in English. Actually what I am teaching is Finance and not English. The fact is that I have not drive away those students that are weak in English, it is them automatically stay away from me.

Nearly all of my close students has passed the College English Test (CET) of Grade 6, some even passed with distinction. And for those that are qualified, the Test for English Majors (TEM) Grade 8 is a must.

I have never sit for such exams but from what I have contacted, a lot of students have passed those exams and some even get high scores, but their performances were quite irregular and uneven. That is some of them are in a very high standard, and some of them are not so ideal. On the other hand, I have also met some student not qualified to sit for the TEM-8, but still their English still shocked me.

Once a student named Catherine gave a presentation on the financial market and her intonation was so poetic and left a deep impression upon me. Immediately she reminded of me the scene in 30 years ago, how I shocked my lecturer with a poetical presentation on Philosophy. The happiest hour of a teacher is that he can pick up a star of tomorrow as how he was picked up many years ago. That was a student in year three of the Bei Jing Foreign Studies University. I have a lot of students from that university but they were from the business school. So I was a little bit waived how come a business school can nourish such a student. At last I got it. She was actually from the Faculty of English. So if you have the actual strength you sure can be admired.

Another student was strong in written English, that I shown her homework to the whole class and ask the class to learn from her which as known as Candy. Her undergraduate was in Harbin a postgraduate in the Poly U of HK. She’s really in the business school. A few months later, when I helped her to revise her CV for job hunting, I learned that she has won the second prize in the nation wide English contest in mainland China. Up till now, she is the only student that I shown the homework to the whole class to learn from it. Again, if you have the actual strength you sure can be admired. She is not qualified to sit for the TEM-8 because she is not in the English faculty and the former one was too young to sit for it at that time.

That is the best standard of English I have met from my students were non-TEM-8 students.

As for CET-6 too many of my students have already passed this block, so it seemed not like a block. May be in other scope of social activities they are superb, but too many stars around me is a fact that seemed not so prominent. How about the TEM-8, I cannot feel great shock and only surprise and consolation that someone teaching Chinese can have a high standard of English. In Hong Kong, Chinese means Chinese Literature and is taught to Chinese people, but in mainland Chinese is very often a language taught to foreigners. So for students learning Chinese, the standard of mainland in spoken English is much higher than those in Hong Kong.

But what I have realized does not completely like that. Students that passed the TEM-8 are not so superb as envisaged, why ? Not because of the exam, but of the individual. That means their prime time has already gone with the exam. Before the exam, they might spend 3 - 6 months for preparation and some even more time; from morn till night and night till morn. A vivid youth became a book worm. Everything in the mind is concerning the syllabus. But as soon as the block is passed, everything passed away also. That is why people complain students sometimes study for exam rather than for themselves. For after the exam, whether the standard can be keep up, it depends on the environment. When one lives in an environment that does not need the demand of the exam, one's standard surely would go backward.

Owing to the internationalization of China, nowadays you can find an ideal English learning environment in mainland more often than past times. But the problem is that you still have to keep it up. Otherwise when you leave that environment, everything will go back to zero. As for those who wish to find a job in Hong Kong, I strongly recommend them to take the TOEFL or IELTS. English in Hong Kong is more important than mainland. There are a lot of foreign firms and organizations in Hong Kong. They require a high standard of English for admission. They would not know what is TEM-8 and CET-6; they only know TOEFL and IELTS. It is a fact.

In Chinese we have a saying of learning is like sailing a boat against the stream, but in western countries, their saying is there's no royal road to learning. The Chinese saying implies that if you don’t go ahead, you will be forced backward; but the western saying implies that all the way it’s very hard and you can hardly have a rest.

Learning is a life long task and should be given up after the exam !
